Vaccines are an essential part of preventive care for people and pets. At the New Shackle Island Veterinary Hospital, our staff will keep your cat's and dog's rabies, distemper, and other important vaccinations up to date through annual and biannual well pet exams.
Core vaccines are recommended for all pets unless they have a medical condition that prevents it. Kittens should get their first preventive shots at six weeks for feline panleukopenia, feline calicivirus, and feline rhinotracheitis. These are repeated every three to four weeks until they're 16 weeks old. Adult cats with no prior records receive the first shot in two doses, two to four weeks apart. These are reapplied 12 months later, and a booster is given every three years unless your veterinarian states otherwise.
They should also receive a mandatory rabies vaccine no later than 12-weeks old, and this shot is repeated every year. You cat may need it up to three times a year. All of these shots prevent diseases that are fatal to your cat.
Core shots for dogs include the rabies vaccination as early as three months and repeated either one to three times per year depending on the localities infection rate and laws. Your puppy will also get a distemper, parvovirus, Adenovirus Type 1, and Adenovirus Type 2 vaccines in three doses between the ages of six weeks and 16 weeks for puppies and two doses three to four weeks apart in dogs over 12 months. They will also get a booster shot a year after the first one and then additional boosters every three years.
